Opposition groups in Djibouti have announced plans to stage an anti-government demonstration on 18 February 2011 to demand the resignation of President Ismail Guelleh; organizers have stated that the rally will be peaceful and that it may continue on 19 and 20 February as well. Opposition groups in the country have been inspired by the recent events in Tunisia and Egypt; they have stated that Guelleh, who has served as president since 1999 and recently amended the country’s constitution to allow him to serve two additional six-year terms, has done little to benefit the average Djiboutian and should resign. It is unknown whether authorities will deploy security forces ahead of the rally, the exact location of which was not specified. Travelers should avoid any gatherings that may arise as a precaution.
